I’m a huge (HUGE) fan of Ana Fonseca’s work. This accomplished artist creates fun, cheerful and cartoony characters! (Just take a look at all those illustrations! They are so cute!) Her unique and versatile style has been featured in several books, apps, pillows and packaging! Do you wanna know a little bit more about this inspiring artist from Portugal? Here is a little interview for you all:
Q: How did you first get into illustration?
A: Hello! First, let me thank you for this opportunity!
Well, I'd like to say that I always knew I wanted to be an illustrator (As I read in all artists' interviews ) but I would be lying. The truth is... I grew surrounded by art because my father draws, paints and sculpts wonderfully. And my mother is a seamstress, (that is also a beautiful form of art) I always liked cartoons, picture books and colorful things… Art has always fascinated me and I tried several times to draw/paint with my father but I always thought I was terrible at it. Since I also liked science, I ended up going this way at school. But I wasn’t happy, there was something missing... While choosing my upper course I decided to take an art class... I thought about giving up several times, frustrated by drawing much worse than all my colleagues. But then I met my husband, (A classmate who was always drawing) And that's where it all began! He always motivates me to word hard and never give up. He was my mentor :) Since then I've discovered that children's books are my passion and I've never stopped!
Q: Best part of your job:
A: Being unlimited and funny!!! Being able to create and live in different magic worlds every day is a privilege :)
Q: Less fun part of your job:
A: The deadlines. I always want to do one more detail but I don’t have the time, Grrr… And some clients (who think artists do not pay bills!!!)
Q: What advice would you give to your younger self if you could?
A: Don’t give up, girl! Yours dreams'll come true. Everything is possible!
Q: Do you have any current side project you would like to share with us?
A: My best and most important project right now is my son. I had a baby boy 4 months ago and I'm amazed with maternity. For now, I try to return to work (slowly) and enjoy time with him at home. But I hope I’ll have a new professional project to share soon :)
Already a fan? Why don't you check out Ana's portfolio for more eye catching illustrations?
