Laura Arias’ illustrations are always a source of inspiration. It just take a few minutes to understand why this talented artist has been featured all around the world. Her drawings are truly eye catching, full of cute animals and playful children. I love the detailing in all her scenes, all those patterns make her work pop up! Do you still want to know more about this wonderful artist? Here is a little interview:
Q: Do you prefer drawing on a sketchbook or digital? Why?
A: I use pencil for my sketches… However, if the illustration is really complex I tend to do tons of small doodles. (I put them all together in Photoshop… I guess I find it difficult to visualize the whole illustration! Using a digital software allows me to place and adjust my sketch at will!)
Q: Where do your find your inspiration?
A: I’m inspired by images, meeting people, learning new styles… I also love to observe a piece and study it! (In order to find out how it was made!) I'm also inspired by books... When I was a little girl, I used to spend hours in the bookstore’s children section. (And the best part was… buying tooooons of books!!!) Nowadays, I keep adding books to my personal collection! I also love Instagram! I believe it’s really easy to find inspiration there.
Q: What do you do when you feel creatively blocked?
A: Instagram is the answer (Once more!) I usually screen capture everything I love, (I do a research about the artist later!) If I find something rousing on the street, I take pictures of it too! It’s truly important to keep yourself curious. Keep your eyes open and let inspiration surprise you!
Q: Apart from drawing you also create beautiful embroidery pieces as well as pottery. Has illustration influenced the development of these crafts?
A: I’ve started to do embroidered pieces and pottery in order to disconnect myself… There was no particular reason, I just wanted to do it. These crafts helped to conceive my work in a new way. Pottery allows me to create 3d pieces. (I had never sculpted before and it’s truly amazing!) When I do embroidery, I immerse myself in the creation of little details…. Sometimes I also try to simplify as well as to create new ways to design colors and patterns!
Q: Any illustration tips you would like to share with us?
A: Sure! I think it’s really useful to draw a piece several times… But each time using a different media! This will allow you to discover new techniques! It’s also important to keep yourself receptive to ideas and suggestions!
