Gabriela Castro (aka Strawberry Style) is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer with more than 8 years of experience (Yes, that is a lot!) I must admit that I love her fresh, kawaii and cartoony style. Her characters are definitely appealing and looks great almost everywhere! (I’m a big fan of her kids tees! So cute!) But hey, wanna know more about this talented illustrator? Here are some Q&A:
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into freelance illustration?
A: I'm Gabriela Castro, a graphic designer graduated from FADU (architecture and design university) I've always enjoyed to illustrate (from a very young age) Soon after graduation, I've changed my mind and decided to follow my dreams! I truly wanted to develop my own characters and to start working (not only as a graphic designer) but also as an illustrator. I do tons of drawing for kids and teens, as well as some retro and vintage inspired vector illustrations!!!
Q: Can you briefly explain your creative process?
A: My creative process has 3 different stages. In first place, I make an exhaustive research (looking for material and inspiration) Secondly, I start to sketch! (I use traditional tools, such as pencils and papers... I find it hard to draw directly on my computer!) Last but not least... It's vector time in Adobe Illustrator! (I also add some little details in Photoshop!)
Q: Your online store is full of amazing products! How do you come up with new merchandise ideas?
A: I'm inspired by anything I would love to buy/have. I ask myself: "Wouldn't it be cool to add my characters to this?" After that I start working on a research (in order to see what is the best way to produce the item, which materials are better, where can the work be printed .etc) What can I say? It's a really hard work! It takes tons of time (and money) but it totally worths it!
Q: How do you deal with criticism?
A: I'm really glad to received polite critics from colleges! It's always great to hear comments about your work! However, it's truly different when you get negative/rude feedback (I usually avoid or delete these type of messages... But sometimes I can be a little pettish and I reply to them anyway!)
Q: What kind of projects are you most interested in?
A: I love to design new characters! (Specially for new products, toys and books!) I also like to create patterns (Not only for clothing but also for origami paper!)
